For three months, I lived with Wissam Muases and Ramia Suleiman, co-founders of the Syrian Artafif collective. Artafif is a collective of Syrian artists who relocated to Beirut, Lebanon with a focus on using art in their projects for social impact.
Sculptors by trade and environmentally focused at heart, Wissam and Ramia began a personal project to alleviate both the trash crisis in Beirut and the Syrian labor displacement within Lebanon. Their solution-- upcycle beer bottles. In an overcrowded workshop, they turn beer bottles into glassware for the home and have engaged Lebanese street artists to design the outside of their products. Through this project they have engaged displaced Syrians in the collection and production processes, providing them with professional skills for their livelihood.
