Soweto, South Africa

A white septuagenarian tour guide told us that apartheid was completely eradicated, that that dark part of South Africa's history was all in the past.

But he, like so many others in Johannesburg, had likely erased Soweto and the other ghetto townships surrounding the city from his mind. Soweto, a township encumbered by poverty and the symptoms of that malaise, were living proof that apartheid was still very much a struggle in South Africa.
