Every woman, Everywhere
Unveiling the veil

My sister is a cloistered Catholic nun who wears a veil daily. She has freely chosen her vows of devotion. She is undisturbed in her choice. However, there are many Muslim women who are persecuted for wearing a veil. In France, Muslim women are forbidden to wear a hijab. The decision to where a veil is a choice and one that no government or person has the right to politicize.
Behind the process: Karlie is a fire dancer, and I had seen her perform like a serpentine goddess, a clear indicator that she would be an amazing model for experimenting with movement, light, shadow and the theme of veils. We played with a single light source-- one simple work light. It emphasized the light and shadows, and I learned in this experiment of play how I could use the light to capture the movement of breath. I usually like to photograph at 1/60 as I move because I can really feel life breathe, and hopefully that’s what you can feel in these images.
What choices are you making that you know others cannot make for themselves? What freedom do you give yourself as a sign of devotion to what you believe in?
